Today we’re addressing the Elephant in the room.
How do you get your first few clients?
Let’s face it this is the most asked question that I get from new and not so new business owners – and I get it because this was one of the questions that I asked over and over again too until I started getting clients on a consistent basis.
I can’t say that what I’m going to share with you is an exact science or some huge secret it basically comes down to simply putting yourself out there and taking action.
Here’s how I took action and started getting clients to work with which also turned into more consistent revenue month after month.
And let’s be honest did the clients poor in overnight? Heck no but they did start coming in.
Talking to people is still one of the best ways to get out there. Let’s face it telling people who you are, what you do and how you can help them (or at least people that they know) helps you get known.
Don’t make the mistake of going in with a hidden agenda of I’m going to get clients instead go in with a goal of building new relationships. This is one of the biggest mistakes that I see business owners make.
They go in guns blazing ready to tell anyone why they need to hire them and often aren’t listening to others or opportunities that might be there.
So go in willing to listen more than talk and be clear with what you do and how you help others.
2. Your professional community
This is what really helped me get my first few clients. Draft an email letting everyone you know in your circle (peers and colleagues) know what you’re up to. This is a much different email than I have stuff for sale and I want clients email.
Here’s one of the emails I sent out which was personalized to that person and our relationship and as you can see it was quick and to the point.
This was one of my first clients that not only had me helping her out on a regular basis but is one of my main referrals for others in your circles.
This is the key when you genuinely connect with others and you’re trying to connect to promote or sell something to people will want to connect back and help you.
3. Social Media
Too often you’ll see people posting free consult or some type of promotional post on Facebook, Instagram or one of the others and have you ever noticed that most of these posts get crickets?
Want to know why?
Because they’re all about you, not the people you want to help.
So then what do you do? You need to find groups of the people you want to speak to whether it’s on Facebook or LinkinedIn really whichever platform the people you want to connect with is on and then you need to help them.
One of the most powerful ways to get more clients in the door is through word of mouth. Almost half of my clients have come from referrals from my first few clients.
Think about how you want each new client to feel and create a client experience that they’ll appreciate. This really goes a long way.
1. Choose one strategy that you will test out.
2. Take action and put yourself out there.
3. Report back here and let me know how it’s turned out for you.
